With reference to your letter of the 16th of May and previous correspondence on the subject of the proposed establishment of certain additional British Postal Agencies in China, I am directed by Mr. Sec. Ch. to transmit to you to be laid before the Marquess of Lansdowne a copy of a despatch from the O.A.C. of Hong Kong, from which His Lordship will see that it is proposed to provide on the Estimate for 1903 for the establishment of an Agency at Chefoo. If Lord Lansdowne sees no objection, Mr. Ch. proposes to approve and authorise the provision of funds for this purpose.

2. Major-General Gascoigne also refers to the proposed establishment of Agencies at Tientsin and Peking, and I am to enquire whether His Lordship sees any objection to the proposal. It will be remembered that, as stated in your letter of the 21st of March, Sir E. Satow is in favour of the establishment of an Agency at Tientsin.

3. Mr. L.A.M. Johnston, the newly appointed P.M.G. of Hong Kong, will leave England to take ...
